Description

My new work which I'm calling "Badlands" is my entry to and Third-Place Winner of the "Unique Planets" space art contest sponsored by Space-Revived which can be found here:  fav.me/dae0jfh

This scene shows a view from a very Earth-like desert moon in orbit around a gas giant.  I wanted to give this landscape a familiar American-West feel to it while also making it clear that this is not our home.  This is definitely the kind of place we may find one day around another nearby star and possibly colonize as a second home.  The viewer in this scene stands at an alignment of a slit canyon and the distant planet and sister moons.  The landscape is dry and hot but temperate enough to support some plant life.  And who knows, there may be a few creatures running about between the rocks as well.  Kind of reminds me of the final scene in the movie Interstellar.

This piece was more of an exercise for me in order to learn how to render better ground textures and sedimentary rocks.  I used Vue to generate the entire landscape.  Photoshop was used to paint the gas giant and is in fact my rendition of Saturn which I've used here on DA many times.  The free Saturn texture can be found here: fav.me/d8f7djy Photoshop was also used to add the clouds and moons.  Hope you like it...

Wow, even got the shadows in the foreground planet correct (sun should be directly overhead based on how the gas giant and the other moons are lit). That's a detail that is overlooked by other artists doing similar work. Nice.
